ROKK I REYKJAVIK
|
|
- Fine early 80's Icelandic Rockumentary (!)
about the burgeoning Icelandic punk scene.
Liana Brown Reports:
Bjork was featured in the 1982 Icelandic documentary called "Rokk i Reykjavik" or "Rock in
Reykjavik". Tappi Tikarass was featured in the film which dealt with Reykjavik's music
scene as well as controversial youth problems like glue sniffing and drugs. Bjork was
actually put on the cover of the film.
At this time Bjork was influenced by German filmmaker Volker Schonoff's "The Tin Drum", and
dressed up kind of like the drummer boy hero of the film. She painted her face with big round
circles on her face. Jakob Magnusson (he helped Bjork put out her first album, "Bjork", when she
was 11 years old) had the following to say about Bjork's drummer girl look:
"She looked so magical and theatrical, a little girl in a yellow dress, with a yellow tin drum and
a progressive puck band behind her."
Bjork still quotes "The Tin Drum" as her favorite film.
Bjork featured live with Tappi Tikarrass.
This is available on a 2cd package.
There are also PAL and NTSC video versions of this documentary officially released.

THE JUNIPER TREE
|
|
- Actress! This is currently available
on Rhino home Video; VHS and PAL, and DVD formats. (78 Min, Black & White)
- "The Juniper Tree" - 1987
- Reissued in 1996 - video cassette
- DVD released on April 23, 2002.
Starring Björk Guðmundsdóttir, Bryndis Petra Bragadóttir, Godrun S. Gisladóttir.
Written & Directed by Nietzchka Keene.
Liana Brown reports:
This was filmed in Iceland and is based on a tale from the Brothers Grimm.
I believe - but don't quote me on this - two Americans came to Iceland to film the movie because
they wanted the stark and isolated landscape that Iceland could offer. They cast native Icelander's
in all the roles. Here's the description of the film from the back cover:
"After their mother is burned at the stake for practicing witchcraft, Margrit (Bjork) and her elder
sister, Katla, flee across Iceland's rugged terrain. reaching a remote farm, Katla casts a
seductive spell on its handsome young widower, Johann, and soon the two are wed to the dismay of
his suspicious young son, Jonas. In an effort to save her son, the spirit of Jonas' mother contacts
Margit and gives her a magic amulet, one that will help Jonas see through Katla's disguise. If it
doesn't work, more than Jonas' life is doomed. A brilliant debut performance by alternative
musician Bjork."
(Obviously this is a re-release of the original film) The film was originally copyrighted
and released (I think) in 1991 and was then released in 1996 by RHINO HOME VIDEO. Interesting
note: The film was never given an Icelandic release. NOTE: Bjork doesn't really consider her
role in this film as "acting". To her "Dancer in the Dark" is the only film that she has acted
in (or at least this is what I've deduced from her comments on the film).
The DVD release featurs an interview with the director, Nietzchka Keene, deleted scenes and publicity photos.

FAITH NO MORE (Music video for "Epic")
|
|
- The fish used at the end of this video (which brought Faith No More
stardom) was Bjork's pet.
"There was a party at Roddy (Bottum, Faith No More keyboardist)'s mansion
in Berkeley and I was just coming from a poetry reading in San Francisco. I
had been given the fish (which she admits to having named 'Linear Soul Child')
from a person at that poetry reading, and brought it to Roddy's party. That's
the last time I ever saw him."

THE YOUNG AMERICANS
|
|
- Liana Brown reports:
Bjork recorded the theme tack for the film "The Young Americans" directed by Danny Cannon. The song
was "Play Dead" and can be found as the last track on some releases of "Debut". A single of the
song was also released which includes various remixes. The song was composed and arranged by David
Arnold and was co-written by Bjork and bassist Jah Wobble.
The film is about London's "new and deadly order of gangster's" and Harvey Keitel stars as an
american Drug Enforcement Agent on the trail of an american gang leader, Carl Frazier. Frazier is
known for his ability to recruit street punks to do his dirty work. Harvey Keitel enlists the aid
of a London street youth (whose father has ties to the more traditional London mob) to infiltrate
the gang headed by Frazier.
Bjork's "Play Dead" is on several CD singles

versions of the DEBUT album. Remember folks,

voices' on other tracks.
